Roots

We’ve been in Cathcart since 1923! Here, we’re building a store of stories.

Our beginnings lie with the gospel of Jesus and the reformations of the church in the 16th century across Europe – but such big stories also bear into local lives. While we live within the confession of faith of the wider church, particular baptist ways of following Jesus have been in Scottish life since the 17thC.

When New Cathcart was developing in the south side of Glasgow, a group started meeting in the Couper Institute in the early 1920s, with support from Govanhill and the Baptist Union of Scotland, seeking to live and speak of the good news of Jesus to these new streets and homes.

Below you can trace out the lives and stories of some of the people who began our church here and what happened next.

We are also making new stories.
